Compared with non-biological catalysts, biological catalysts have great advantages, such as being able to react at normal temperature and pressure, fast reaction rate, specific catalytic effect, and low price, but the disadvantages are that they are susceptible to heat, certain chemical substances and Inactivation due to the destruction of miscellaneous bacteria, poor stability, high temperature and pH range requirements during the reaction. Enzymes are biological catalysts. Living organisms use them to speed up chemical reactions in the body. Without enzymes, many chemical reactions in living organisms would proceed very slowly, making it difficult to sustain life. Enzymes work best at a temperature of about 37°C (the temperature of the human body). If the temperature is higher than 50°C or 60°C, the enzyme will be destroyed and can no longer function. Therefore, biodetergents, which use enzymes to break down stains on clothes, are most effective when used at low temperatures.
For example: for the reaction of H2O2 decomposing into water and oxygen, the activation energy is 74kJ/mol; if it is catalyzed by I-, the activation energy is 59kJ/mol; if it is catalyzed by enzyme, the activation energy is 25kJ/mol. It can be seen that the effect of biocatalyst is obvious.
